The Milman Parry Collection of Oral Literature is the largest repository of Balkan heroic songs; it includes the results of fieldwork carried out by Milman Parry and Albert Lord in the 1930s. These materials have provided the foundation for studies of oral tradition, with significant consequences in many fields, like Homeric studies and studies of medieval poetry. Moreover, these recordings attracted the admiration of Béla Bartók, the first ethnomusicologist to study the Parry Collection’s materials during his last years spent in the United States. The presentation will discuss the relevant issues raised by this landmark research, dealing particularly with some topics, which have a central place in the contemporary debate, like mediatization, the textualization of the performance, and the role of musical transcriptions.
